Can your dreams predict the future?

I had a dream that seemed to predict an earthquake

Have you ever had eerily coincidental dreams that seem to predict the future? I’ve had a couple of those and I don’t know what to make of them. Are they coincidences? Did they predict the future? Or is this just my subconscious knowing my environment better than me?

Let me tell you about this one, seemingly predicting an earthquake. I recorded it at 1am on 25 June after waking up from the dream.

The dream

I am in my house and was on my laptop a while ago. Everything’s pretty normal. Now it’s bedtime I’ve been sleeping for a while. But things start to shake and I’m jolted awake. At first I thought it was just my watch, vibrating, telling me to wake up. But it’s more than just my watch. My bed is trembling. Then, because my dreams often involve sci-fi plot lines, I thought there was some sort of device that someone planted in my bed.

I am panicking because I don’t know what’s happening. I go to my parents room and ask them what’s going on. It occurred to me that this might be a dream, but I go ask them anyway.

My mom confirms my fear and tells me it’s an earthquake and instructs me on what to do to stay safe. “Lay flat.” “Here.”

This is all very scary and I wake up.

What I first thought

Okay, so, keep in mind, I’ve never felt an earthquake before, so my subconscious completely created this dream from my imagination.

My first rationale and analysis of the dream was “Something shook my bed and therefore I felt it in the dream as well”. You know how you sometimes hear a weird annoying noise in your dream and then wake up to find it was your alarm ringing? This might have been that but instead with shaking. So, my dog jumped on my bed and I felt shaking or something like that.

The only problem was, this was 1am and my house was pitch-black and everyone was asleep. Including my dog.

There was an earthquake in Dubai on this day!

So, I wanted to google “was there an earthquake right now in Dubai?”. But I thought no one would document it that quickly… I decided to go back to sleep and rather check the news when I woke up in the morning.

Low and behold, there was actually an earthquake the morning I dreamt this! Honestly, I knew I was dreaming this for a reason but I was still shocked to discover there was actually an earthquake. Actually, it was in Iran, but the tremors could still be felt here. Whatever. (Here's an article)

However, the earthquake was not 1am, when I had this dream. It was 7:30am, a bit later, when I was sound asleep, not dreaming about earthquakes anymore. So why did I dream about it at 1am?

Possible explanations for this

So, this is my thinking… I don’t have a solid answer, only speculation. But let me know what you think. It’s good to get different perspectives on this.

  1. There was actually some sort of shaking at this time. Maybe a smaller earthquake or one that wasn’t documented. Or maybe something else shook my bed, like I first thought.

  2. I have some sort of psychic abilities and I actually predicted this would happen. (this explanation is not my top choice to be honest)

  3. This was totally coincidental and my subconscious just happened to have earthquakes in mind, on the day there would actually be one.

I think it is maybe a combination of the first and the last options. The shaking in the dream was so vivid that it leads me to believe it was prompted from my surroundings. And also, coincidences happen. If you have some spiritual beliefs, you might say that they were MEANT to happen. Nevertheless, I will refer to them as coincidences, because there is no concrete explanation for this.

Like I said, I don’t know the answers, but these are the facts of the dream and the situation, and a bit of my opinion.

A lot of these coincidental incidents have happened to me and it honestly freaks me out a bit sometimes. But I would love to hear what you make of it. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. And let me know if you would like to hear other freaky stories like this.

Either way, bye, and stay tuned for more stories from the Dreamverse!
